I love College Football! I love making picks on the games and even placing bets on games! However, I have yet to win an official sports bet on a college football game. As, co-host Andy Heidemann can confirm, this is still the case. I lost $5 to him on the Miami v. Clemson matchup last Saturday night. However, despite this, there are many reasons to still place bets when it comes to College Football, even though the loses can be painful.
Personally, my favorite team is the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Over the years, I always expected them to beat the teams they were expected beat in the same way we see Power 5 teams defeat FCS opponents. However, as I have aged, the wisdom of my elders has been passed on to me. Never take Notre Dame when the spread is large and the opponent seems to be a lesser opponent. The more I watched and the more I learned about Sports Betting, the more this rings true. Lets take a look at the last three years alone.
2018 Notre Dame, a CFP participant, vs Ball State. Favored by 34. Final score? 24-16 W.
Vanderbilt. Favored by two scores. Final score? 22-17 W
Pitt. Favored by 21. Final score? 19-14 W
USC. Favored by 14. Final score? 24-17 W
2019 Notre Dame
Louisville. Favored by 19.5. Final score? 35-17 W
Virginia Tech. Favored by 17.5. Final score? 21-20 on a last second W
2020 Notre Dame
Duke. Favored by 21.5 Final score? 27-13 W
Florida St. (last week). Favored by 20.5. Final score? 42-26 W
While some of these teams seem good based on their name recognition, some of these were down years, they should cover when they are supposed to.
That is just my team! Still not convinced College Football betting can be brutal? Scott Van Pelt had an entire segment based on this topic. Here are two examples of this:
Betting on College Football can be a rough time. However, those rough times make the victories that much sweeter. As an example, one of the tips we gave you on Bet, Bath, and Beyond was to take SMU over Memphis. It was a close game and exciting game that SMU won! A second bet, that discussed off the podcast was taking Notre Dame over Duke, but don’t take them to cover. That hit as well.
College Football is a crazy game. These are still young adults who are in school while they play and we bet on them week in and week out. The potential for madness has always existed and will continue to be present. It is what makes betting on college football heartbreaking, but also so extremely awesome! That is why I love betting on it and I think you all will too!
