Cam Newton, former Heisman winner, national title winner, NFL league MVP… Ah, I remember it like it was yesterday. However, it was exactly that; in the past. He’s had it rough lately as I’m sure you know as a sports fan. After getting done dirty by the Panthers and getting cut close to the end of free agency a few years ago, he found himself on the Patriots. Everyone thought it was the end of the NFL. “How could the league let the Pats get Cam?” people were asking. Turns out, Cam looked… Not so good. Granted, the Patriots offense was terrible. And I mean TERRIBLE. No help at all for poor Newton. Well this year they re-signed Cam for a small QB contract and got some weapons around him. Nothing spectacular but much better than before. All looked well UNTIL… the San Fransisco 49ers did the unthinkable and traded up for the #3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
In a crazy turn of events, the 49ers made a move to jump the line in the draft. Speculation is, they want a quarterback. A new quarterback from a top 5 draft spot in the NFL is what dreams are made of. Literally, there is almost nothing better unless you’re actually winning a Super Bowl. There is however, one downside, your current QB. In this case, the man left out will be Jimmy “Handsome” Garoppolo. Back in the day, when old Tom Brady used to sling it in New England, his backup was Mr. Jimmy Handsome himself. It seemed that the Pats organization really loved him too. That’s when Tom Brady basically did the old “It’s either him or me” dance and got Jimmy exiled to the 9ers. Fast forward to present, Tom Brady is livin’ it up in Florda, eating avocado ice cream and drinking aloe water out of the Lombardi. Basically, the stage is now set for a BANGER of a trade.
Let’s just lay it out there. The Patriots love Jimmy G. They always have and Bill Belichick wants his baby back. Cam is on a cheap deal, the perfect kind of contract to inherit for a single year while you groom your precious #3 pick (who I hope and pray for the 9ers sake is NOT Mac Jones). The Pats come out getting the guy they always wanted on an already structured deal, they just have to pick up the paper work. But don’t just take my word for it, even Stephen A. Smith is talking about it!
